Beltway “Wisdom” Fails (Again)
This posting is dedicated to all the unbelievers who didn’t think Rudy Giuliani could garner support amongst right-wing social conservatives.
Conventional beltway wisdom argued that Rudy Giuliani would never get the nomination because his pro-choice, pro-civil union history would prevent him from winning support of the party’s social conservative “base”, an imperative for success. This argument assumed that social conservatives are single issue voters and unable to put the major issues of our day (national security, war against radical Islam, Iraq) ahead of their religious beliefs. A subtly insulting assumption.
With Pat Robertson’s endorsement, Rudy Giuliani is not only one step closer to the Republican Party’s nomination for President, but quite possibly the only candidate capable of uniting the Republican Party AND appealing to the “vital center” next November.
